Position Description: Digital Instrutor – Tacoma Public Library
This position will provide structured learning opportunities, training and some technical support for the library’s digital resource offerings. This will include eMedia, mobile devices, and other related equipment and service areas. This position will provide technical support in the use of a variety of technologies and will assist in the development of concepts and projects for the creation of digital media within the scope of public services. The successful candidate will work independently within the framework of library policies and procedures under general direction of a library manager. The work schedule includes evenings and weekends.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Plan, develop, and conduct structured learning programs, workshops, and tutorials to enhance:
- Use of the StoryLab, the library’s digital media lab, and the mobile digital media lab
- Use of the library’s digital resources and eMedia resources
- Provide technical support to encourage patrons who have little or no prior experience:
- Demonstrating the use of the equipment and software available in the library’s digital media labs
- Demonstrating the use of a variety of digital media products
- Perform outreach to the community:
- Demonstrating the services and media projects available in the library’s digital media labs
- Demonstrating the use of e-Media formats commonly used in public libraries (including e-readers, audio and video content, digital formats and services, and other library resources
Qualifications:
Training and Education:
- Experience providing instruction
- Experience in project management
- Experience with PC/Mac and mobile operating systems including Windows, Macintosh, iOS and Android platforms
- Extensive experience with Adobe Creative Suite production (Photoshop, Illustrator) and Apple software (Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Aperture)
- Experience with programming and web coding such as JavaScript, CSS, PHP, Python, Ruby, C#, C++, Lua
Desirable:
- A digital media portfolio
- Knowledge of copyright and licensing issues related to media
- Experience operating audio, video, photographic production equipment, such as HD and video cameras, DSLR cameras, scanners, audio mixers, microphones, and lighting kits
- Experience in web design using CMS systems such as WordPress (knowledge of HTML, HTML 5 and CSS a plus)
- Experience with educational, game, and simulation (2D and 3D) coding and programming languages such as Scratch, TurtleArt, Tynker, Alice, Unity, Codea, PureData, Livewire, Pygame, ToonBoom, Autodesk Maya
- A teaching certificate, or a Master’s in Library Science (MLS) or Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an accredited library master’s degree program
Physical Requirements:
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate computer and media equipment, to retrieve materials, and to carry out tasks related to the operation of equipment in the digital media labs
- Physical ability and skill to lift and move up to 25+ pounds on a regular basis in the handling of digital media equipment and/or library materials, and up to 50 pounds of bulky materials, occasionally, in a safe manner. Materials include items such as laptop computers, sound recording equipment, photographic equipment, and other library materials
- Physical ability to push loaded trucks and bins (on wheels/rollers), sometimes weighing up to 300+ pounds loaded
- Ability to stand the majority of work shift and to file and retrieve library materials at high and low levels. (Overhead and floor level. High shelves range from approximately 7 feet to 12 feet, depending on location.)
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and step stools in a safe manner
- Physical agility to bend, stoop, twist, turn, and move materials from place to place in the library
- Visual acuity to read CRT screens
- Ability to operate a desktop computer, and to perform various detailed tasks
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:
A Washington state driver’s license with a good driving record and maintenance thereafter, or proof of equivalent mobility, may be required. Appointment is subject to passing a background check

- Apple and Microsoft computer software applications and other digital media resources used in media creation, such as:
- Sound production, recording, and editing software such as Audacity, Pro Tools, Logic Pro,Garageband or alternates
- Digital imaging software such as Gimp, Photoshop, Pixelmator or alternates
- Digital video editing software such as iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, Final Cut Pro, or alternates
- Multimedia production equipment used to create digital media exhibits such as image capture devices and scanners
- Current public service theory and practice:
- Positive public service attitude as demonstrated by handling contacts with adults and seniors, teens, children, the business community, co-workers, and vendors with tact and courtesy
- Sound judgment in applying and interpreting library policies and procedures
- Ability to assess issues and recommend actions to improve delivery of public service
- Communication:
- Clear oral communication and the ability to converse on the phone and in person with persons of all ages
- Clear written communication and the ability to compose reports and correspondence
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to independently maintain currency in emerging media production technologies and their potential uses.
- Demonstrated ability to give instruction in new digital media technologies and their applications.
- Knowledge of the operation of digital media equipment and software programs such as digital photography and computer graphics.
- Knowledge of Apple architecture and operating systems.
- Knowledge of story boarding and of digital storytelling processes, including narrative and illustrative conventions and techniques in temporal media.

This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the Tacoma Public Library and Local 120. An employee in this position will be required to join the union within 30 days of hire. New employees must successfully complete a six month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
